The Movie and Book

This movie is based on the Newberry Award-winning children's book, Because of Winn Dixie, written by Kate DiCamillo. The story follows a lonely young girl named Opal who adopts a an orphaned dog she names Winn Dixie (for the supermarket where she finds him). The friendship between Opal and her dog brings together residents of her small Florida town, young and old, and also helps Opal heal her relationship with her father. Read the full synopsis here.

The Curriculum

Because of Winn Dixie: Because of You is curriculum designed for a facilitator to engage youth ages 7-12 in both group and individual activities relating to the central themes in Because of Winn Dixie. 

Objectives for youth include:

• Engage in activities that examine the choices a storyteller can make about the way to tell a story, whether in words, with pictures, in music, through dance, or in motion pictures.
  
• Reflect on the importance of literature and the visual and performing arts in telling stories across time.
  
• Learn to contemplate the connection between caring and responsibility.
